Out with the Old - October 2019 Empties

I'm struggling lately. I don't think ever, in the many year history of my blog, have I posted two empties back to back with nothing in between. I have so many products that are half reviewed - extensive notes, maybe the post is half written and waiting on photos, or the photos were taken and I just haven't started writing. The desire to write stuff for the blog is there, but when I sit down to do I have very few words in mind. My empties feel like the only posts I can toss together because they require such little effort. I'm still toying with the idea of a re-brand, and I feel like that'll motivate me to work harder on the blog, but once again that's so much effort I just don't feel like I have the energy for. My goal in the upcoming month is to write one post a week, excluding my empties at the end of the month.

Anyway, enough about my *feelings* and on to the sixteen products I finished in October! My empties this month feature a surprising amount of makeup and makeup-adjacent items, which is an interesting change. As always, products I plan to repurchase (or already have) are marked with an asterisk (*). Click through to read more!

This was my second packet of Palmer's Natural Fusions Chia Seed+Argan Oil Hair Mask, and it left me with a better impression than the first one, but I'm still not wowed. This hair mask is softening and smells quite nice, but it doesn't seem to make a real impact on my hair. I split this packet with Morgan, who enjoyed it, but his hair is far shorter and less fussy than mine is. It's not bad, it just doesn't impress me.

I buy this black nail polish over and over again because it's dark, shiny, and most importantly, cheap. I don't get amazing wear from Essence's Black is Back polish, but at like $3, I'm not super fussed. My nails have been bare since running out of this polish - I generally only paint them black, and my local Priceline's Essence stand is picked to pieces, but once I can find Black is Back in stock I'm certain to repurchase.

The Ordinary's 10% Niacinamide/1% Zinc has been a staple in my routine for about two years now, with no end in sight. This serum has a huge impact on my skin - it keeps is clearer and calmer than almost any other product I've used. I'm currently using a different niacinamide heavy serum, which is also good, but not quite on The Ordinary's level. I'll be repurchasing this serum as long as they make it.

Pixi Glow Glycolic Boost Sheet Mask*^
Generally I don't like sheet masks - most of the time they're uncomfortable, inconvenient, and yield very few tangible results - but Pixi's Glow Glycolic Boost Sheet Mask is an exception! I love this mask! While I still find applying and wearing it cumbersome, this mask gives my skin an instant radiance boost! I'd definitely pick up a 3 pack of these to keep on hand for special occasions. I'd go as far as to say this is the second best sheet mask I've ever used (following When's Snow Magic mask

Garnier's Intensive 7 Day Body Lotion has been a favorite of mine for at least half a decade! This lotion is lightweight and sinks in quickly, yet it delivers so much moisture! What really draws me to this lotion is the value - you get 400ml for like $7AUD, and a single bottle lasts me around 3-4 months of regular use. I'm currently using a different body lotion, but I'll more than likely repurchase Garnier's option in the future.

I was never a huge fan of Abnomoly's guava flavored PetroWhat? Lip Balm. To me, this was nothing more than Deciem's failed attempt at a Glossier BalmDotCom copycat. In an effort to avoid waste, I tried to use this lip balm up anyway, and I got a fair way through it, before it went absolutely rancid. Seemingly overnight, the PetroWhat? balm changed from perfectly fine to one of the worst things I've ever tasted - the flavor changed from fruity and tart to soapy and vomit-y. Awful. I won't be repurchasing.

I had a complicated relationship with Pixi's Makeup Fixing Mist. I loved the effect of this setting spray - it melded my makeup together beautifully, but the spray nozzle was annoying, to say the least. This mist could come out either in a lovely fine mist, or a shocking jet that defeated the purpose of the product. If Pixi improved the Makeup Fixing Mist's packaging, I would repurchase, but for now it's a pass for me.

This is one of Morgan's empties, though it's also a product I stand by! Sukin's Sensitive Skin Moisturizer is just all around nice - it's formula is effective and inoffensive, and you get a lot of product for a very fair price. Between the two of us, we've used several bottles, and already have another one in rotation.

Urban Decay's Primer Potion is an iconic product - and for good reason - it just *works*. This primer keeps my eyeshadows and liners looking fresh and crease free in all but the worst weather. One travel sized tube lasts me the better part of the year, and comes at a nice even $20. I've already repurchased.

Proactiv Pore Targeting Treatment^
I've had an incredibly complicated relationship with Proactiv's Pore Targeting Treatment. This anti-acne serum has ruined my skin...and saved it. When I first received it a couple years ago (I know, I know) I used it as directed and ruined my moisture barrier - applying this serum all over twice a day will zap any moisture from your skin right quick. Used as a spot treatment, it was fantastic for healing zits quickly. I recently pulled it out to treat a few spots and had a horrific reaction to it. The bottle is practically empty, and I don't want to risk another reaction, so I'm just gonna toss it.

Once again, I'm far from a sheet mask fanatic, but I though Palmer's Coconut Charcoal Detoxifying Mask was alright. Not good or bad, but nice enough. I don't feel like it did anything in terms of 'detoxifying", but it left my skin soft and smooth, so I can't complain I guess.

Essence's Make Me Brow is another long term favorite. I use this tinted brow gel just about every time I wear makeup for an effortless but groomed brow look. Despite me using it approximately four days a week, one tube lasts me nearly a year! I just picked up a new tube a few days ago.

Mecca Cosmetica Lit From Within Illuminating Balm
Mecca Cosmetic's Lit From Within Illuminating Balm was a surprise hit for me! I received this as my Beauty Loop birthday gift last year, and didn't really think I'd like it. Turns out, I loved it to the last drop - seriously, my jar is scraped clean. This highlighting cream created a beautiful, natural sheen and was so easy to blend. I only finished it a few days ago and I already miss it. I have two highlighters to finish up first, but I think I may repurchase it if the price is fair - I should probably look into that.

Go-To Face Hero Face Oil
Go-To is a brand that really appeals to me, for aesthetic reasons. It's kinda Australia's take on Glossier, in my mind at least. I really want to try their products, but they're pricier than they should be, and I don't wanna put that money in Zoe Foster Blake's hands (she rubs me the wrong way, to say the least). I received this little sample of the Face Hero Face Oil in a recent giveaway and I felt pretty 'eh' about it. It was fine - it smelled a lot like Eve Lom's Cleansing Balm, and it was comfortable and moisturizing, but nothing to write home about.

Bourjois Healthy Mix BB Cream*
I bought this Bourjois Healthy Mix BB Cream on a whim many months back, and I really learned to love it over time. This BB Cream has a comfortable feeling, easily blended formula that offers light coverage with healthy sheen. Wear isn't amazing - it definitely breaks down after six or so hours, but that's standard BB Cream behavior in my experience. I will probably buy it again next time Bourjois goes on a good deal.

The Ordinary 7% Glycolic Toning Solution*
It took me a year and a half, but I finally finished The Ordinary's 7% Glycolic Toning Solution. This acid toner is great - it's quite similar to Pixi's Glow Tonic, but one step up in strength. The price is perfect, especially for the massive 240ml you get. I have a few acid exfoliators to work through, but I do plan on buying the 7% Glycolic Toning Solution again. Good stuff.
