The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser Review

The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser Review
I love a lot of things about The Ordinary, but until recently they lacked my favorite category of product - cleansers. When they released their first cleanser, simply dubbed Squalane Cleanser, about two months ago, I couldn't have been more excited and planned a trip into their shop in The Rocks. I ended up coming across the cleanser sooner than expected in my local Priceline, and have been using it religiously since. The Ordinary describes their Squalane Cleanser as "A gentle cleansing product formulated to target makeup removal whilst leaving the skin feeling smooth and moisturized. The formula incorporates Squalane, alongside other lipophilic esters that are gentle, moisturizing, efficient in dissolving makeup and facial impurities and increasing the spreadability of the product. When rubbed between your palms for approximately 10-30 seconds, the product undergoes an important textural change from a balm-like consistency to a clear oil-like consistency. This allows the emulsifying sucrose esters in the formula to trap and blend the dissolved makeup and facial impurities with water for rinsing. Being non-comedogenic and soap-free, this formula is designed to be gentle enough for daily use, without over-drying the skin, making it suitable for all skin types." The Squalane Cleanser contains 50ml (1.7 fl oz) and retails for $13.90 - a larger version is in the works. Deciem is cruelty free, with this particular product being vegan. This cleanser was made in Canada.

The Ordinary's Squalane Cleanser comes in a simple opaque grey squeeze tube with a flip top cap. Multi-lingual directions are printed on the back of the tube. Packaging is straightforward, functional, and recyclable.

The Squalane Cleanser had a slightly different texture than I expected. This cleanser is a white, balmy,  thick gel cream that melts into a thin, clear, oil consistency as you work it into the skin. Though there seems to be a lot of hype over this cleanser's consistency, I don't think it's as revolutionary as it seems - Borghese had an extremely similar product, the ReClaim Gel-to-Oil Cleanser years ago. The Ordinary's version is a huge step up in quality, but gel-to-oil is hardly a novel concept.

Though The Ordinary's Squalane Cleanser can be used day or night, as a first or second cleanser, I use it exclusively to take my makeup off. This cleanser is an extremely effective makeup remover, it gets off every last trace of my makeup with barely any effort - it just melts everything right off. The Squalane Cleanser doesn't emulsify, but it's still easily rinsed with hands or a wash cloth, and doesn't leave any sort of greasy film. I always follow up with a more traditional gel cleanser, but this could easily be a standalone cleanser if you wear little to no makeup (or if you want to cleanse twice with it!). I've found The Ordinary's Squalane Cleanser to be very gentle and well tolerated by my skin. I did experiencing a weird, lingering tingling on my acne the first time I used this cleanser, but it seemed to be a one off thing (I haven't seen anyone else mention it), but otherwise it's been smooth sailing.

The Squalane Cleanser has a squalane and water base, with gentle coconut and sugar derived cleansing agents and a handful of skin boosting emollients. The remaining ingredients are non-problematic texture enhancers, chelating ingredients, and preservatives. Like all The Ordinary products, the Squalane Cleanser is fragrance free. (Be aware that this cleanser contains a nut extract).

I like The Ordinary's Squalane Cleanser so much more than I expected to! This cleanser is one of the best makeup removers I've tried in a long time - not only is it effective, it's also enjoyable! My only complaint about this cleanser is that I'm using my tube up very quickly. A lot of product is needed with each use, so just six weeks after purchasing, I've already had to cut the tube open and scrape out the little bit that's left. This is the only factor that's keeping me from repurchasing The Ordinary's Squalane Cleanser. If a larger or better valued size becomes available, this gel-to-oil cleanser will be back in my rotation in a heartbeat. If you're looking to try a somewhat novel yet still effective makeup remover, The Ordinary's Squalane Cleanser is a great choice that I highly recommend.
