Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Treatment Pen Review

Neutrogena says their Light Therapy Acne Treatment Pen is a "Targeted spot treatment with the same technology as the Neutrogena® Light Therapy Acne Mask. Blue light targets pimple causing bacteria & red light reduces inflammation. Clinically proven technology dermatologists use, now easy to use anywhere, anytime. No mess, no residue, no flaking." I'd been interested in Neutrogena's Light Therapy Mask for a while, so when the opportunity arose to try the a more targeted version, I was more than excited to accept. The Light Therapy Acne Treatment Pen retails for $22.99 at Ulta ($39.99AUD at Priceline). Neutrogena products are not cruelty free. The Light Therapy Acne Treatment Pen was made in China.

Neutrogena's Light Therapy Acne Treatment Pen is an approximately 5 inch long, thin silver pen with a white slanted tip that houses three LED lights - two blue, and one red. The lighted tip of the pen is meant to be held in place directly over a blemish for two minutes, three times a day. The Light Therapy pen beeps and turns off automatically after a two minute treatment (I wish it would vibrate as well, so my deaf self could tell when it's done without peeking!). This treatment tool becomes ever so slightly warm during use - but it's a barely perceptible feeling. It does, however, leaves a short lived square imprint around the targeted area.
I've been using the Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Treatment Pen on and off for about 6 weeks, and have had surprisingly good results! I tried this pen with a few different kinds of pimples at different stages (ex: active whiteheads, bumps that have yet to surface) with similar results across the board. After just a couple treatments pimples begin to shrink or flatten, with redness being significantly reduced. This LED therapy pen won't clear pimples up on it's own, but it significantly speeds up the healing process, at least in my experience. Since beginning to use this product, my pimples clear up in about 4 days, as opposed to lingering for a week or longer. Since receiving this product several of my non-blogging friends have purchased it (or the coordinating mask) and have found them to be equally efficacious.

Though I've had great results with Neutrogena's Light Therapy Acne Treatment Pen, I do have one qualm - the battery life! This treatment pen is powered by an AAA battery (included!), which only lasts 10-14 days with consistent use. That seems terribly inefficient to me! As much as I enjoy this product, it's hard for me to imagine that it'll stay in my daily routine if I need to bust out a screwdriver and replace the battery every week and a half. I definitely need to pick up some rechargeable batteries.

I'm very impressed by Neutrogena's Light Therapy Acne Treatment Pen! The price is a bit high for a drugstore price, but it's a worthy investment! Not to mention, it's a fraction of the price of many other at-home LED therapy products. I recommend this pocket sized device if you get a spot here or there - it isn't time or energy efficient to treat multiple blemishes with it. If you're more acne prone I'd recommend the Light Therapy Mask instead - I intend to pick it up next time it's on sale! Be it the mask or treatment pen, I think almost anyone can benefit from Neutrogena's Light Therapy range - I definitely recommend looking into it!
