Olay SPF 30 Complete Daily Defence Moisturizer Review (Sensitive Skin Formula)

Olay Complete Daily Defence Moisturizer Review
Moving to Australia has made me take sun protection way more seriously, and in heart of that, I made the switch from Olay's Complete Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15 to their Complete Daily Defence Moisturizer with SPF 30 - a change I don't regret at all! The brand says their Complete Defence Daily Moisturizing Lotion contains "Olay moisturisers for daily hydration and SPF30+ UVA/UVB broad-spectrum protection, to protect against premature ageing and the damaging effects of daily UV exposure. Best of all, the unique Olay formula is light enough to wear every day! Its light, non-greasy formula with vitamin E, aloe and green tea extract absorbs quickly into your skin to replenish moisture, without leaving skin greasy." This day time moisturizer contains 75ml (2.5 fl oz) and retails for a reasonable $14.99AUD, but it's often on sale for as low as $8. Unfortunately, Olay is not a cruelty free company.

Olay's Complete Daily Defence Moisturizer comes in an opaque white plastic bottle with a convenient lockable pump. The pump, which never seems to get clogged, dispenses only a small amount of product at a time, so I end up using between 3-4 pumps per application. On top of being convenient and functional, this moisturizer's packaging is well labeled - offering a full ingredient list on the exterior box, and additional product information on the bottle it's self. All packaging is recyclable.

The Complete Daily Defence Moisturizer is a thin, lightweight white lotion that doesn't feel even remotely like a sunscreen! Nor does it apply like one! This moisturizer works into the skin easily and absorbs quickly without leaving a white cast. Complete Daily Defence dries matte and actually makes a decent canvas for makeup - it doesn't interrupt application or wear in any way that I've noticed. You should take key interest in the fact that I mentioned that this moisturizer is matte. Why? Well, truly, I think it's a stretch to call Complete Daily Defence a moisturizer. Even on my combo skin, this product hardly offers any hydration, though it does leave my skin feeling soft to the touch. After six months (and 1.5 bottles) of use, my skin has tolerated Olay's SPF 30 Complete Daily Defence Moisturizer extremely well, and I've suffered no ill effects or irritation.

So Complete Daily Defence may not be an excellent moisturizer, but it IS an excellent broad spectrum sunscreen for the face. Comprised of both chemical and mineral sunblocking agents, Complete Daily Defence provides more than adequate sun protection for me and my fair, easily burned skin. Over the course of my use I haven't had even a mild sunburn, nor do I see any other signs of sun damage. To put the icing on the cake, this sunscreen doesn't seem to flashback in photos!

Olay's SPF 30 Complete Daily Defence Moisturizer's formula is pretty agreeable in my book. Four excellent sun protection ingredients (7.5% Octinoxate, 6.0% Zinc Oxide, 2.5% Octisalate, 2.5% Octocrylene) are suspended in an unremarkable (but non problematic!) base. Olay was thoughtful enough to include some beneficial antioxidants and vitamins like niacinamide, panthenol (proVitamin B6), and Vitamin E, though they likely won't yield any benefits. Olay offers their Complete Daily Defence Moisturizer in a fragranced and unfragranced (or sensitive) formula - I prefer and recommend the latter, though the choice is obviously up to you.

Who do I recommend Complete Daily Defence to? Well, that depends. As a moisturizer, I think this product is best suited to those with oily skin, as it provides next to no moisture. However, if used purely as a facial sunscreen and layered over another hydrating product, I think Complete Daily Defence can be used by anyone, including those with sensitive or acne prone skin.

Olay's Complete Daily Defence Moisturizer is an excellent and affordable facial sunscreen for normal to oily skin. This product provides excellent sun protection - but without any flair. If you prefer a flashier product with big claims and more intriguing ingredients, Complete Daily Defence may not be for you, but if you're just looking for a facial sunscreen at the drugstore, I'm having a hard time thinking of a better option. I highly recommend Olay's SPF 30 Complete Daily Defence Moisturizer, and I'll continue using it for a good long while.
