Essano Rosehip Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser Review

Essano Rosehip Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser Review
Essano is a New Zealand based natural skincare brand that I've only recently become aware of. Though I was initially drawn in by the packaging, I became quite interested in the brand's eco-friendly yet functional philosophy. After reading a handful of rave reviews, I decided to pick up two products during a recent Priceline sale and after a couple weeks of testing, I'm ready to share my thoughts on the Rosehip Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser. Essano says their "soap-free formulation with active natural botanicals and certified organic rosehip oil gently cleanses without drying." This face wash contains 140ml (4.73 fl oz) and retails for $14.99 at Priceline and select pharmacies and grocery stores. Essano is cruelty free and vegan friendly. This cleanser was made in New Zealand.

I really like Essano's slightly vintage aesthetic! The Rosehip Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser comes in an opaque brown bottle with a convenient pump that dispenses exactly the right amount of product - very functional and sanitary as well. A rose colored label wraps around the bottle, offering a product description, a full ingredient list, plus a list of ingredients that never appear in Essano's products. Keeping with the brand's eco-friendly theme, the entirety of this product's packaging is recyclable.

The Rosehip Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser is a thick, almost gelatinous clear gel. I'm not quite sure why Essano chose to call it a "foaming" cleanser when it scarcely lathers at all. Instead of forming a light foam that glides around on the skin, it remains in it's gel-like state, so you end up feeling like you're just pushing the product around on your face. It's strange, and I'm struggling to get accustomed to the feeling. Though the Rosehip Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser is incapable of removing a full face of makeup, it can certainly wash away any remnants that your makeup remover missed, as well as excess oil and grime you've built up during the day (or night). In spite of it's unusual consistency, this cleanser is easily rinsed off. The Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser has an extremely faint rose scent that's hardly worth mentioning - but what is worth mentioning is the weird aftertaste it can cause if you get it close to your mouth. Of course careful cleansing will prevent this product, but we're all a little careless first thing in the morning, right?

Essano's Rosehip Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser is exceptionally gentle and poses little risk of irritation, even for those with sensitive skin. This cleanser's formula is very simple, its mainly comprised of water, aloe, and gentle surfactants. Fragrance is present in this product, but in a small (>1%) percentage, so it's unlikely to cause much of an issue. Essano also included a couple of unique, New Zealand-native plant extracts like mamaku, a type of fern and harakeke, a type of flax - both of these ingredients have been used traditionally by Maori people for their soothing properties. The very last ingredient is kind of ironic - it's the product's namesake, rosehip oil, which is very rich in antioxidants - but let's be real here, there isn't anywhere near enough to make an impact. All around, Essano's Rosehip Gentle Foaming Cleanser has a nice, straightforward formula that's kind to the skin.

I think just about anyone could use Essano's Rosehip Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser, but I think it would be best suited for those with normal to combination skin. Very dry or dehydrated complexions may find this face wash slightly stripping and should stick to creamier, richer cleansers. On the other hand, someone with very oily skin would probably be dissatisfied with this cleanser's ability to wash away excessive amounts of sebum. As I've mentioned, the gentle formula should be fine for sensitive skin, provided you're not reactive to any of the ingredients. To sum it up, Essano's Rosehip Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser is a middle of the road product - most people can use it, unless they veer too far onto either end of the spectrum.

Essano's Rosehip Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser is a functional but completely joyless product. I just get no enjoyment from using this cleanser. That feels like a silly thing to say, I guess, but I love skincare and I like washing my face and I just don't feel inspired by this product. I'll finish it, but I won't buy it again. That doesn't mean I think it's bad! I do think Essano's cleanser makes a nice morning cleanser, and its a great affordable choice for someone looking for a gentle, natural(ish) face wash. If you live in Oceania, I think Essano's range is worth looking into - this won't be my last product from this Kiwi brand!
