Maybelline Brow Drama Pomade Crayon Review+Swatches (Auburn)

Maybelline Auburn Brow Drama Pomade Crayon
Maybelline says "master the perfect brow in one easy sweep with our first brow pomade crayon. Sculpts and tames as it colors. Pigmented formula and creamy texture combine to help create bold and beautiful brows." The new Brow Drama  Pomade Crayon is available in four shades, I picked up the Auburn shade, hoping to find a match for my red hair. This interesting pencil/pomade hybrid contains 1 gram of product and retails for around $10 at the drugstore. Maybelline is not cruelty free. This brow pencil was made in the USA.

[if only it could be sharpened]
There are a couple common complaints about this brow product's packaging, and I'm about to echo them all, even though one of them benefits me personally. Maybelline's Brow Drama Pomade Crayon comes in a short, chunky black tube that bears the product's name in white lettering. Product twists up and down smoothly, which is convenient for sure, but there's no way to sharpen the chubby tip. As you can see above, the Brow Drama Pomade Crayon starts off with a tapered point, but after just a few uses it wears down to a wide, rounded tip that can be difficult to use. Luckily, I was blessed with naturally full, thick brows, so this chubby pomade crayon is very easy for me to use, but those with thin brows will really struggle to get a precise application from Maybelline's Brow Drama Pomade Crayon. This product's packaging is not recyclable.

[I think I could use a bit of a pluck]
Maybelline's Brow Drama Pomade Crayon has a smooth, almost creamy consistency that helps it apply effortlessly. This pomade pencil glides on, depositing medium, buildable color with a light, flexible hold. This product clings well to your existing brow hairs, but it doesn't fare as well on the skin, where its easily rubbed off. The Brow Drama Pomade Crayon is best for creating that really solid, dramatic brow look; it can be difficult to create a natural, textured look with this product, you'll need to thoroughly brush the brows with a spoolie before and after application and top the brows with a gel to finish if that's the look you're going for. If your eyebrows are short or sparse and you need to fill in gaps or draw on a full brow, Maybelline's Brow Drama Pomade Crayon probably isn't for you - you'll want to opt for a more traditional pencil, I recommend the It Cosmetic Brow Power Universal Brow Pencil or Maybelline's Brow Precise Shaping Pencil. Wear time is decent, I'd say this brow pomade lasts around 6-8 hours, depending on conditions (it isn't waterproof and can be sweat off!)

Auburn is a medium brown shade with subtle reddish tones. The color is slightly darker than I prefer for myself, but I appreciate that it doesn't pull too warm or cool. It's rare for drugstore brands to offer a natural looking brow products for red heads - Maybelline really stands out for creating ginger friendly brow shades, but unfortunately, they don't sell their Auburn shade in Australia. I'd love to see that change. The Brow Drama Pomade Crayon has a satin finish - not quite matte, just enough of a sheen to give the brow a bit of dimension.

[2 swipes on the left, 1 swipe on the right]
Maybelline's Brow Drama Pomade Crayon is a very unique product, especially for the drugstore! This chunky little brow product has limited appeal in my opinion. While I seem to be exactly the kind of person this product is targeted to (naturally thick brows that don't need much color or hold), I think most people would find Brow Drama frustrating to work with. Between the bulbous tip, inability to adhere to the skin, and less than dependable wear - you're probably better off sticking with a more traditional brow product. Unless you're looking for a novel brow product, or already have full, enviable brows that just need a quick swipe of something, pass on Maybelline's pomade pencil and pick up one of their other brow products instead - they're all great and there's something for everyone.
