Peony Cosmetics Gilded Eyeshadow Trio Review+Swatch

Peony Cosmetics calls their Gilded Eyeshadow Trio a "highly pigmented palette of 3 deep, after-dark shades in a nourishing, natural base that keeps it blendable & velvety smooth. These wearable shadows are formulated with silicon-coated micronized pigments & healthy kaolin clay for a seamless, silky texture that lasts up to 8 hours." This tiny trio of shadows contains 3 grams of product and sells for $17.95 on the brand's website. Peony Cosmetics, a recently launched subsidiary of So Susan Cosmetics, focuses on creating cruelty free, heath conscious products that are formulated with mineral oil, parabens, or phthalates. This eyeshadow trio was made in China.
The Gilded Eyeshadow Trio is super little, measuring just 4cm x 7cm! These shadows come in a tiny, rectangular blue compact that features the brand logo and and a cluster of peonies. The back of this tiny plastic palette offers a product description and full ingredient list. I love that Peony kept packaging to a bare minimum, skipping unnecessary features like sponge tip applicators - they simply included three pans of eyeshadow and a small but decent quality magnified mirror.  This is the essence of travel friendly packaging - cute, sturdy, and compact. If only if it was recyclable.
I was initially impressed by the Gilded Eyeshadow Trio - these powder shadows seemed soft, smooth, and well pigmented, but the more I worked with this palette the less impressed I was. Peony Cosmetics' eyeshadows are very soft, but they apply in a patchy, splotchy way and they blend away to nothing. You'll see random bare spots in my eye look where there isn't any eyeshadow - it just disappeared during blending - luckily this problem isn't as apparent in person! While the Peony Cosmetics Gilded Eyeshadow Trio fails in the pigmentation department, it does wear pretty well - when worn over primer these shadows don't crease and barely fade.

The Gilded Eyeshadow Trio has a great basic color configuration - a light, medium, and deep shade with three different finishes. I'm not sure where Peony gets the idea that these are dark, night time shades, because really they'd be perfect every day colors (if they had a better formula).

Shade 1 is a light, butter yellow shade with a softly frosted finish. This is the best performer in the Gilded trio, with even pigmentation, a smooth texture and decent payoff.

Shade 2 is a chocolate brown with a satin matte finish. Color payoff is weak, leaving this shadow fairly sheer even over primer. This brown eyeshadow is on the stiff side and can be difficult to blend.

Shade 3 is a warm, orange tinged gold with a very shimmery finish. The shimmer particles are loosely bound and end up all over the place - under my eye, on my brow bone - lots of fall out with this one. This is the most uneven of the bunch.
I really wanted to like Peony Cosmetics' Gilded Eyeshadow Trio, but I don't. This miniature palette has a lot of things going for it - the packaging is well made in all aspects, and the color scheme is universally appealing. Unfortunately, the low quality formula is a pain to work with. I don't recommend the Peony Cosmetics Gilded Eyeshadow Trio, its overpriced for it's size and quality, but I'm not writing the brand off yet.
