Benefit They're Real! Push Up Liner Review+Swatches

Benefit says their They're Real! Push Up Liner is the "first ever lash hugging gel liner in a pen! This matte black gel formula won't smudge, budge, or dry out, and the innovative, soft AccuFlex Tip hugs your lash line from corner to corner. The closer the line, the bigger the eye!" This gel liner pen features a waterproof formula that's said to last for a full 24 hours! The They're Real! Push Up Liner is available in two sizes - the full size contains 1.4 grams and sells for $24. A smaller, .36 gram "try-me"size costs $22. Benefit also offers a value kit called Real Tease, that contains a mini of They're Real! Mascara and Liner for $22. Benefit does not test on animals. This gel liner was made in Japan.

The They're Real! Push Up Liner is housed in a black plastic pen; the product name and Benefit logo are printed on the front. Removing the cap, you'll find a unique applicator. They're Real's AccuFlex tip is a flexible, angled rubber nib that dispenses product, via a twist up mechanism at the bottom of the pen (I guess They're Real! Twist up doesn't sound very sexy at all). Benefit says that applicator will hug the lash line, and it certainly does, in fact I think it hugs a little too tightly. If your eyelids are anything but perfectly smooth and taut, this gel liner pen will drag. I find it difficult to create a smooth line in just one pass, even on my youthful eyelids. It takes a little while to learn how to work with They're Real!'s applicator, but if you take your time and give it a few tries, you'll get the hang of it. This product's packaging is not recyclable.
Benefit's They're Real! Push Up Liner has an excellent formula, in my opinion, but much like the applicator, it takes some getting used to. This gel liner is an intensely pigmented, matte, deep black. Seriously, this stuff is so dark, its like VantaBlack. They're Real! gel liner has a thick, dry texture that tends to ball up a little if you don't apply it in smooth, sweeping strokes. They're Real! is not recommended for use on the waterline. Once Benefit's They're Real! gel liner is on it isn't going anywhere - ever. This stuff has crazy staying power. They're Real! doesn't flake, smudge, smear, or fade for at least fifteen hours - I'm sure it could last much longer if need be. Benefit wasn't kidding when they said They're Real! is waterproof, because this eyeliner is damn near impossible to remove! I've taken showers with this eyeliner on and it remained pristine. They're Real! barely budges when I try to remove it with my go-tos, Garnier Micellar Water or Cleansing Oil. Face wash doesn't even phase it. The only thing that removes Benefit's gel liner is Avon's Skin-so-Soft, and even then my eyelids are stained a dark grey. Benefit created a "They're Real! Remover" to accompany this product, but I've sampled it in store and found it ineffective.
I totally see why Benefit's They're Real! Push Up Liner is such a love it or hate it product! There's definitely a learning curve for both the application and formula. Unfortunately, a smooth application is nearly unobtainable for those with crepe-y lids; some tugging will be a factor even on smooth eyelids. They're Real!'s insane depth cannot even be captured on camera, this eyeliner is seriously black. If I still worked in a restaurant, this product would replace Soap&Glory's SuperCat as my every day eyeliner because it can last through anything, or so it seems! For now, I'll be reserving They're Real! for days when I need serious lasting power. I really do like this gel liner pen, and recommend it to experienced eyeliner uses who need a long lasting, intensely black liner. By the way, Maybelline recently released a dupe of this gel liner in  the UK, I'm not sure if and when it'll make it's way across the pond, but I'll definitely be giving it a try!
