Australis Matte Out Mattifying Face Base Review

Australis' Matte Out Mattifying Face Base is a "lightweight face mattifier that can be applied underneath a primer, prior to foundation application. This product works best when applied on oil prone areas such as the T zone and chin to even skintone and absorb excess oil on the face. It contains silica powder, which acts as an oil absorbing material that is used to control the excess oil sebum and also generate a softer feel. Geranium oil which boosts and improves elasticity of the skin. This ingredient also acts as an astringent, antiseptic, tonic, antibiotic, and anti infectious agent. Rose hip oil, which prevents skin dehydration." The Matte Out Mattifying Face Base costs $13.95 AUD. Australis, a brand exclusive to Australia (if you couldn't tell by the name!), is cruelty free. This primer was made in Thailand.

Australis' Matte Out Mattifying Face Base looks like a glue stick. This mattifying primer comes in a white twist tube. A label wraps around the cap, featuring the brand logo and product name on the front, and a few claims on the back. Product scrolls up and down with ease, and feels sturdily set into the tube. The cap snaps onto the base securely, locking the twisting mechanism. Packaging is portable and well made, but unfortunately it isn't recyclable.
The way Australis describes their Matte Out Mattifying Fae Base is interesting to me, they make it sound like a primer for a primer, which is a bit much in my opinion. I apply this lavender tinted primer straight from the tube, swiping it over my T zone and chin as directed. Matte Out feels interesting, its texture is also similar to a glue stick at first. Initially, this oil controlling primer feels tacky and heavy, but it lightens up as it melds with the skin, taking on a softer, more powdery feel. This mattifying base doesn't do much to visibly improve skin's texture, though the lavender tint is mildly brightening. It does, however, provide a smooth canvas for BB creams and foundations, helping them apply evenly over pores. Australis' Matte Out Mattifying Face Base fulfills it's promise to control oil, it's effects last about eight hours, even on hot days like today (103F/40C, ugh). Even though this primer works well, I have a few complains. This product will not last very long. I've been using it semi-regularly for about a month and I'm already nearly half way through my stick. Australis doesn't specify how much product you're getting, but I can only guess that it isn't much. This primer also smells unpleasant to me - vaguely floral, yet distinctly makeup-y, if you feel me.
I'm fairly pleased with Australis' Matte Out Mattifying Face Base. I haven't had the best experience with this brand before, but maybe this is a turning point. Packaging is quite functional, though not much to look at. This primer is so easy to apply, just swipe it on and let it sit for a bit. The light purple tint is barely there, but its just enough to perk up the complexion. Matte Out won't hide pores, but it will provide a smooth base to apply makeup over, all while keeping oil at bay, no matter how hot it is. I probably won't repurchase the Matte Out Mattifying Face Base, by I do recommend it if you're looking for a primer to help your makeup beat the Aussie heat.
