Urban Decay Black Velvet 24/7 Glide On Pencil Review

Urban Decay's new Black Velvet 24/7 Glide On Eyeliner is a "must for smokey eye fanatic; an ultra velvety, plush version of our creamy, waterproof 24/7 formula. More powdery than our original 24/7 Eye Pencil, 24/7 Velvet blends easier to create soft, smokey edge. Use this pencil to get perfectly blended out or rich, defined lines. 24/7 Velvet is the ultimate liner for doing a smokey rimmed eye (or whenever you want a look that's more matte and soft)." Each Black Velvet pencil contains 1.2 grams (.04 oz) and sell for $20. I received a deluxe sample of this eyeliner in my April Ipsy Bag. Urban Decay is a cruelty free brand, though their parent company, L'Oreal, is not. This product was made in Germany.

Urban Decay's Black Velvet 24/7 Glide On Eyeliner comes in a matte black, coated wood pencil with a grey cap. The UD logo, product name, and shade name are printed on the pencil in grey letters. This pencil sharpens smoothly, but the liner is soft, so the tip breaks off easily.
I'm not a fan of Urban Decay's iconic Zero 24/7 Eyeliner, so my hopes weren't too high for this new Velvet formula. So here's the thing...the Black Velvet pencil is super great, but it doesn't quite live up to it's claims. Urban Decay's Black Velvet Eyeliner has an awesome texture - its ultra smooth and there's no resistance during application. On top of being awesome smooth, Black Velvet is very pigmented. This pencil is at least twice as dark as Zero, with a velvety matte finish. Here's where Black Velvet varies from it's claims. UD says their new Velvet formula is extra smudgeable - but I find that it sets pretty quickly and is resistant to smudging. Ironically, Zero is way more smudgy. I get great wear from this pencil - ten hours on the eyelid, and five to six hours on the waterline. True to it's claims, this eyeliner is waterproof and pretty difficult to remove even with a cleansing oil.
Urban Decay Black Velvet 24/7 Glide On Eyeliner is a great black pencil liner. Long wearing, easy to apply, well pigmented, and super dark. What more can you ask for? If you're lookin for a super smudgy pencil, keep on searchin'. Twenty bucks is pricey for a pencil, but the quality makes it justifiable.  If you want a rich, matte black eyeliner, definitely check out Urban Decay's Black Velvet eyeliner.
