BA Star Smokey Eyeshadow Palette Review+Swatches

BA Star is a brand that caters to cheerleaders and dancers. I was first introduced to the brand over the summer when I was sent on of their Star Dust pigments. BrandBacker recently sent me BA Star's brand new Smokey Eyeshadow Palette, which the brand calls "highly pigmented and long lasting." BA Star also offers their new palette in "Natural". This palette contains five eyeshadows that come to a total weight of .22 oz. This eyeshadow palette retails for a reasonable $8.75. BA Star does not offer animal testing information. This palette was made in China. BA Star products can be ordered through the brand's website.

BA Star's Eyeshadow Palettes are elongated, thin black palettes with a clear flip top. The BA Star logo is printed on the top of the palette in silver lettering. A full ingredient list can be found on the back of the palette. The five rectangular eyeshadows are set into the palette in a single row. A double ended applicator is included with this palette - a sponge tip on one end, an awful quality brush on the other. Needless to say, the applicator was promptly tossed out.
BA Star's eyeshadows are pretty interesting - they're a pressed powder, but they have a creamy, almost spongy eel to them. This is probably what Almay intended their Shadow Softies to be like. The strange consistency causes some texture issues - these shadows are slightly crumbly in the pan. All five shades cause a fair amount of fallout. Aside from the textural problems, BA Star's eyeshadows are good. Four of the five eyeshadows are richly pigmented and they all apply and blend well. I've had variable wear from BA Star's Smokey Eyeshadow Palette. None of the shadows fade, but I've experienced slight creasing after six hours of wear when worn over certain primers. This eyeshadow formula seems to be water resistant, I need an oil based remover to get these eyeshadow off.

Before I move on to talking about the colors - I'd like to touch on the color scheme of the palette - its great! You get the four basic smokey eye shadows, but you also get a bright pop of color that's a little unexpected but it also ties in very well. Good job, BA Star.
Shade 1 is a sheer, heavily frosted white with a silvery influence. This is the weak link in BA Star's Smokey Eye Palette. The texture is drier than the rest, and it isn't as strongly pigmented. That being said, its definitely still workable.
Shade 2 is a pure silver with a metallic finish. This shadow is quite crumbly in the pan, and it can apply in a chunky manner. Shade 2 can go on sheerly or with impressive intensity depending on how its applied.
Shade 3 is a gorgeous, frosty deep gunmetal grey with a navy blue duochromatic flash. This lovely shade is the most strongly pigmented in the palette. This deep grey rains fallout on to the cheeks during application.
Shade 4 is a deep, dark matte black. Wow, this is an awesome black eyeshadow! The fourth shade is great as both a shadow and an eyeliner. This matte black is much more agreeable to work with than most of it's kind - it blends so well! Unfortunately, this shadow causes tons of fallout, but I guess that comes with the territory.
Shade 5 is a lovely, standard blue with a frosty finish. This shade has the potential to be dated or garish, or a gorgeous pop of color depending on how its applied. I love smudging this blue along the inner half of the lower lash line.
BA Star's Smokey Eyeshadow Palette is good, though there are a couple issues. Packaging is cheap and plain, but functional. These eyeshadows are nicely pigmented and are easy to work with. The texture is unique, but somewhat problematic - expect fall out. I enjoy the color scheme of the palette, I can create a handful of looks. The price is fair for the quality - this palette is worth picking up if it appeals to you. I know I'll be getting a fair amount of use from BA Star's Smokey Eye Palette - especially from the awesome matte black!

  1. Defs looks like the stuff my sister used to wear.

    1. Yup. The ads on BA Star's site look like the makeup she used to wear in dance.
